Georgetown is the county seat of Williamson County, which was formed on March 13, 1848. The county was named after Robert McAlpin Williamson (known as “Three-legged Willie”), a Texas statesman and judge at the time.
Georgetown was the 7th fastest growing city in the US as of May 14, 2019. It is 30 miles north of Austin. Its nicknames are: Red Poppy Capital of Texas and G-Town. Georgetown’s motto is: “Sincerely Yours”
Georgetown was founded in 1875 from four existing colleges. In the 1870s, the oldest of these colleges was Southwestern University. It had been founded 35 years earlier in 1840.
Southwestern University is the oldest university in Texas. It is in Georgetown about one-half mile from the historic square.
African-Americans from Texas and beyond were allowed to attend Southwestern University beginning in 1965. In 1965, Ernest Clark enrolled and graduated in 1969. Since then, many of these graduates went on to become academics, doctors, economists, business owners, professionals and many more.
The Williamson County Courthouse Historical District, containing some 46 contributing structures, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Georgetown is also known as the “Red Poppy” Capital of Texas for the red poppy (Papaver rhoeas) wildflowers planted throughout the city.
